Measure the width of your bed. Octagon window shutters will help you choose gaps that are wide enough for the bed. Choose enough gaps to fit the width of your bed. If they are slightly wider than the bed, that’s okay. You will probably not find a perfect fit anyway. Determine whether to paint gaps or leave those that are. If you are going to sand and paint gaps, wear protective mask and protective gloves to prevent inhalation of lead-colored particles. If you leave gaps like that, spray them with a clear coating of shellac or polyurethane, to keep all lead color from flaking. This is especially important if you use them in a child’s bedroom.
Select the area on the wall where you want to hang octagon window shutters. Then screw in bolts or heavy screws sheetrock. These will support the hanging brackets on the back of the hatches. Lay shutters down, side by side on the floor. Attach a wooden ladder at the top and bottom, to keep the gaps in place. Then attach hanging brackets to the top of the wooden piece. Hang the shutter button on the wall so that the underside of the slots meets the mattress.
Tips and warnings
If you cannot find quality, shutters are used, buy new (wood, not plastic) and paint them yourself. You may need them with a crackling end to an older effect.
