Refuse the dump trucks, save yards, flea markets, shipyard sales or at construction sites where the houses are demolished or remodeled. Vintage shutters come in a variety of sizes. Make sure they are the right size for the intended use and are all of the same size. Blinds have either fixed or movable slats, so be aware of the type of waste disposal. Clean your shutters with a household cleaning spray, cloth, and possibly a steel brush. For some gaps, this is all that will be required. Others may need to be sanded or peeled. A sandblast is ideal for blinds that are a water power tray. If you do not have these, a chemical stripper is the second best.
You may have to dress your vintage shutters with one of the many chemical wooden stripes on the market. Most are very toxic, but some are environmentally friendly. In both cases, it is a good idea to wear latex or rubber gloves, a mask and protective clothing. Work in a well-ventilated area across the newspaper and brush the strip as color. Soon you will see the color begin to bubble. Follow the instructions on the stripper to determine the correct time to start scratching with filler. Continue until all the old color is gone.
